Fitting a baseball hat
A well-fitting baseball hat is essential for both comfort and style. Here are some key points to consider:
- Choose the right size: Select a hat that fits your head size comfortably. Baseball hats come in three main fits: snap back, strap back, and fitted. Fitted hats are designed to fit a specific head size, while snap back and strap back hats can be adjusted.
- Measure your head: To ensure a proper fit, measure the circumference of your head using a flexible tape measure or a string. Wrap the tape or string around the widest part of your head, just above your eyebrows and ears. Use this measurement to determine your hat size.
- Wool and cotton hats: These materials shrink with heat and moisture, so it’s best to buy a hat that’s slightly larger than your head size. This allows for shrinkage and a comfortable fit.
- Polyester hats: These hats don’t shrink as much as wool and cotton, so you can opt for a closer fit.
- Breaking in a fitted hat: If your hat is too small, try the following methods to stretch it:
- Remove any stickers and take a hot shower while wearing the hat. Let it dry naturally.
- Undo the stitching on the sweatband (near the back of the hat) to loosen the fit.
- Use a combination of hand-stretching and knee-pushing to gently stretch the hat until you hear a “pop” (the sound of stitching coming apart).
- Curving the bill: For a more authentic look, curve the bill of your baseball hat. You can do this by:
- Shaping the bill with your hands.
- Folding the bill back into the hat and leaving it overnight.
- Using a coffee mug or similar object to shape the bill while it dries.
- Wear it right: Position your baseball hat correctly:
- For a fitted hat, wear it with the bill forward and the crown sitting comfortably on your head.
- Avoid wearing a hat too far back on your head, as this can make it look like a child’s hat.
By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to find a baseball hat that fits comfortably and looks great on you.
